John’s Reading List – "Why We Sleep" - April 2022
/John’s Reading List – April 2022
We live in a time dominated by fast-paced days full of work obligations, commitments, and being constantly busy. To relax we often make poor choices involving endless entertaining, binge watching the latest TV series, and topping it all off with our favorite adult beverage. This often leaves us tired and overwhelmed.
At the epicenter of these exhausting cycles is the lack of sleep. Many of us don’t, or at least not as much as we should, recognize how important quality sleep is to our physical health and general well-being.
Unfortunately, our culture celebrates those who claim they never sleep. The truth is however, everyone must sleep to be fully functional; cognitively and physically.
Along with a nutritious diet and regular exercise, sleep is a physiological necessity for a vigorous life. Why We Sleep, by Matthew Walker, PhD, is in significant and captivating study on how quality sleep is a nonnegotiable element of a healthy existence. Walker persuasively describes our societal sleep deficit and for the many virtues of sleep itself.
It is not often that I am able to recommend a book as life-changing, this one is. Why We Sleep is simply a must-read for those seeking a more healthful and productive reality.
Matthew Walker is a professor of neuroscience and psychology at UC Berkeley, the Director of its Sleep and Neuroimaging Lab, and a former professor of psychiatry at Harvard University.
